Finn Juhls Hus

While visiting Denmark back in 2011, my wife and I had the opportunity to visit the personal residence of the architect and designer, Finn Juhl.

Juhl has always been a personal favorite of mine, especially for his furniture designs, such as the Japanese Collection (Model 137)...

...or any of the countless other designs, such as the Model 53 chairs that famed GM Chief Designer, Harley Earl chose for his own office...

So when I finally got a chance to visit Denmark, Finn Juhl's residence was high on my list of priorities as a must-see.

Unfortunately, we were only going to be in the country for a few days, and the house would not be open for visitors during that time. What to do? A few e-mails to the museum curator of the Ordrupgaard Museum and I was soon able to arrange a personal tour!

Turns out, the museum was very interested in my photography, and by the fact that I wanted to come all the way out from California to see this house.

In fact, they were so interested that they even arranged for a film crew to be there while we visited, to interview us and create a short video to air on Danish National Television. It was used or use by the Ministry of Tourism to promote their country.

If you ever happen to be in Denmark, I'd highly recommend a trip to Ordrupgaard for a visit to the Finn Juhl House. It's well worth the trip and I'm glad we did. The house is a beautiful time capsule and a national treasure. It's also a lesson in how to live comfortably - but modestly. The house is very simple and zen-like in its efficient use of space and calming demeanor. It's a very peaceful place.

And the collection of original furniture is just stunning...
